The Heat are reportedly interested in Jameer Nelson, but I’m starting to get the sense that has more to do with Mario Chalmers, Norris Cole and Shabazz Napier.

It seems Miami just wants a new point guard.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald:

An official who has spoken to the Heat said Miami very much likes Phoenix combo guard Goran Dragic
Oklahoma City impending restricted free agent Reggie Jackson also intrigues the Heat. Jackson politely declined to say if the Heat interests him.

Dragic and Jackson, both of whom will be free agents this summer, both appear to be available in trades – and that’s probably what it would take for Miami to acquire either.

The Heat aren’t slated to have cap room this offseason, and Dragic and Jackson should each draw much more than the mid-level exception. Miami has a few assets – future first-round picks (besides one owed to the 76ers), Luol Deng and Chalmers among them – to pool for a better point guard, but the Heat aren’t well-positioned to swing a deal either now or in a sign-and-trade this summer.

Plus, Miami must maintain 2016 cap room to re-sign Hassan Whiteside.

Dragic or Jackson sound like wishful thinking on the Heat’s part, but it’s not impossible they could acquire either player, and it’s helpful to know where they’re aiming.
