Report: Rockets signing four free agents, including Chris Walker

SEC Basketball Tournament - Second Round - Florida vs Alabama

Frederick Breedon

The Rockets struck quickly after the NBA draft, reportedly agreeing to sign undrafted free agent Christian Wood.

Wood had first-round talent, though I can see why teams might have looked elsewhere. He’s not the headiest player.

A couple months later, Houston is again dipping into the pool of undrafted free agents.

Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle:

The Rockets are expected to sign guard Denzel Livingston from Incarnate Word and Waltrip High School, Remi Yusuf from Texas A&M-Kingsville and Dobie High School, power forward Chris Walker from Florida and guard Will Cummings of Temple.

Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders:

I suspect the other three will get identical deals.

Walker is the big name here. He was a top recruit who didn’t really develop at Florida. Maybe the Rockets can tap more of his potential. His athleticism is still impressive.

Livingston and Cummings also went undrafted this year.

Yusuf is a bit different. He’s 31 and has been playing overseas. It’s odd for a player his age to get/take a deal like this, though the optimistic spin is Houston likes his ability enough to pass on a younger player with more upside.

The Rockets have 13 players with guaranteed salaries plus Wood (hasn’t yet officially signed) and Montrezl Harrell (second-round pick who has yet to sign). So, there could be room for any of these four players to make the regular-season roster.

But I don’t think they’re good enough to make the cut. Most likely, they’re headed to Houston’s D-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. All four are eligible to have their D-League rights assigned if they’re waived.
