Report: Scott Skiles believed to be candidate to replace Jacque Vaughn with Magic

The Magic haven’t fired Jacque Vaughn.

But it seems so imminent, rumors are already swirling about Orlando’s next permanent coach.

Chris Broussard of ESPN:

several league executives have speculated that former Magic player Scott Skiles could be a front-runner for the job.

Announcement: ProBasketballTalk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $300,000 Fantasy Basketball league for Friday’s NBA games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $30,000. Starts at 7pm ET on Friday. Here’s the FanDuel link.

Maybe this is just baseless speculation, but Skiles fits the profile of a logical candidate. He spent about half his playing career and all his best seasons in Orlando, and he has plenty of head-coaching experience. He last coached two seasons ago and has led the Suns, Bulls and Bucks to the playoffs with a career record of 443-433.

Skiles has a reputation as a hard-driving head man who gets his teams to play solid defense, and that’s what the Magic might need to get into playoff contention after two, going on three, years outside the postseason – which would match their playoff postseason drought since Shaq was in Orlando.

The Magic are still young, and many of their players need to develop further. But if management is intent on winning more as soon as possible, they could do far worse than Skiles.
