Reports: Bryan Colangelo to become 76ers’ general manager

Bryan Colangelo’s candidacy to become the 76ers general manager has been doing more than “gathering momentum.”

John Gonzalez of CSN Philly:

Bryan Colangelo will be installed as the Sixers’ new general manager, league sources told on Wednesday evening. The story was first reported by Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.

Colangelo will replace Sam Hinkie, whose resignation yesterday was stunning not for the result but the timing.

Bryan, of course, is the son of Jerry Colangelo – whom the 76ers hired to oversee the front office, effectively demoting Hinkie. Nepotism? You bet.

Hindsight treats Bryan’s run with the Raptors better than evaluations at the time did, but his record is still flawed. He gave Andrea Bargnani a huge extension and traded for Rudy Gay, big moves that contributed to Toronto sputtering. DeMar DeRozan’s extension, criticized widely at the time, turned out well – a feather in Bryan’s cap. Overall, a team should probably do better than Bryan running the front office. But if he’s No. 2 behind his dad, that might be an appropriate role.

Then again, it’s only a matter of time until the 76-year-old Jerry steps down. Any idea whom he’ll try to get as a replacement?
