Rumor: Suns trending toward hiring Monty Williams as coach

The Suns made Monty Williams the top target of their coaching search.

The Lakers have also shown interest in the 76ers assistant and former Pelicans head coach.

But it seems Phoenix might get its man.

Marc Stein of The New York Times:

The big question: Does this mean the Lakers will hire Tyronn Lue, long-considered the frontrunner for that job?

It seems unlikely Williams would choose the Suns over Lakers. The Lakers have prestige, LeBron James and, usually, more money to pay coaches.

But they also have a murky management structure, higher expectations and the unique challenges of coaching LeBron. It’s not for everybody, and it’s at least possible Williams prefers Phoenix.

Williams could also wait out Philadelphia. If the 76ers lose to the Raptors in the second round, Brett Brown will be on the hot seat.

Whether he’s their first, second or 50th choice, the Suns would do well to get Williams if they can. He’s a solid tactical coach who connects well with players and would bring much-needed stability to that organization.
