The Sixers have averted something of a crisis on the injury front. Robert Covington suffered a scary-looking knee injury in Friday night’s preseason finale against the Celtics and had to be helped off the court, but Yahoo’s Shams Charania reports that it’s a sprained MCL that will sideline him only two weeks.

Covington has been one of the bright spots in the Sixers’ at-times interminable rebuilding process. After barely playing his rookie season in Houston, he appeared in 70 games for the Sixers last year and averaged 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He’s a solid outside shooter and defender, one of the players the Sixers have identified as someone they want to keep around as they cycle through young players with varying potential. It’s good that this injury isn’t as serious as it looked and won’t be too much of a setback for Covington.
