Stephen Curry called for phantom foul (video)

Stephen Curry was called for his fourth foul with 3:21 left in the third quarter of last night’s Warriors-Celtics game – a decent amount of foul trouble for Golden State’s star guard.

Curry’s transgression? Raising his hand after Draymond Green hacked Jae Crowder.

That’s it.

Curry was nowhere near the play. He was just indicating his belief that Kelly Olynyk’s shot, which caromed over the backboard, touched something out of bounds. The official apparently thought Curry was taking responsibility for the foul – and called him for it.

The mistake might have actually benefited the Warriors. Curry stayed in the game and didn’t pick up another foul. Green, who was spared, finished with five fouls. He played the final 15:50 – including both overtimes – one foul from fouling out.

Obviously, plenty would’ve changed if Green were called for the foul rather than Curry, but Golden State definitely made the most of having Green on the court.
