Steven Adams out three weeks or more, but at least he left like a champ

Steven Adams

Steven Adams

Steven Adams injured his shooting hand in the Thunder’s win over the Clippers yesterday, leading to these awesome(ly bad and good) free throws (hat tip: SB Nation):

But the injury will also lead to missed time for Oklahoma City’s starting center.

Thunder release:

Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams underwent successful surgery today to address a fracture in the fourth metacarpal of his right hand, Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced.

The procedure was performed by Thunder team physicians at McBride Hospital in Oklahoma City. Adams will be re-evaluated in three weeks, at which time a further update will be provided.

With the extended All-Star break, Oklahoma City has just nine games in the next three weeks. But two games out of playoff position, the Thunder have little margin for error, and missing their starting center will surely hurt.

Kendrick Perkins will return after his one-game suspension. Nick Collison provides a steadying presence. Rookie Mitch McGary had 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting and 10 rebounds against the Clippers.

Oklahoma City has a chance to cobble together a solid center rotation in Adams’ absence. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook need only support, not a star at the position.

This also opens a spot for the World team in the Rising Stars Challenge. Pero Antic?
