With Troy Brown and Deion Branch likely out, Johnson should step up as New England’s No. 3 receiver.

The speedster has missed a number of practices this August with an undisclosed injury. Johnson is a great kick returner, but should have no fantasy value this season.

The former Patriot has missed multiple practice days with “dehydration” and suffered from drops and inconsisency when he has practiced.

Johnson was far from guaranteed to make the Patriots roster. In New Orleans, he’ll compete with Michael Lewis for return duties and take on Devery Henderson for the No. 3 receiver role. It could give the Saints more flexibility to trade Donte’ Stallworth, but they are likely to be disappointed if they expect Johnson to produce.

The 2003 third-rounder is fighting for his roster spot this season. But it sounds like he doesn’t get “it” in New England. ''I’m doing everything I have to do every single year to make it happen,” he said. ''But it’s not up to me.”

Johnson hurt his knee in the preseason. Not that he’s very good, but New Orleans’ receiving corps is probably the league’s worst.

Coach Belichick wouldn’t talk about the injuries to Deion Branch or Troy Brown. But he did say that Bethel Johnson have to step it up. Johnson will be a No. 3 receiver at best this week and still isn’t a fantasy option.

Johnson is a surprise, but was added to the injury report as questionable on Saturday. David Patten will start opposite David Givens, with P.K. Sam probably the No. 3 receiver. Newly signed Kevin Kasper could play.

Johnson is a risky play until he shows something on the field.

Head coach Bill Belichick said he would update the condition of Johnson on Wednesday.
