It’s the second time in two years Schneider has taken time off from coaching. He missed most of the 2020 season with Seattle due to personal reasons. Assistant special teams coach Carlos Polk is expected to take on an expanded role and could replace Schneider if he doesn’t return.

Polk was San Diego’s best special teams player a year ago.

He suffered the injury during Saturday’s preseason game.

A backup linebacker, Polk was a star on their special teams. He will probably be placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Polk missed the last 14 games of last season with a shoulder injury. Dielman was an exclusive rights free agent while Hallen and Polk were unrestricted free agents.

The special teamer injured his shoulder while making a tackle against Jacksonville. Rookie Jyles Tucker was promoted to take his roster spot.

It’d be Tucker, Carlos Polk, or Marques Harris. Tucker showed potential in Week 17 last year, racking up three sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery he returned for a touchdown. Of course, he did it against Oakland, so it might not count. But he’s someone to monitor in big-play IDP leagues.

Thomas was effective in the preseason and may latch on elsewhere. If not, he could go to the practice squad. Polk became expendable with Jyles Tucker’s emergence. Darren Sproles will likely return punts with Jones gone.

Polk can rush the passer some, but will mostly play special teams.
