49ers head coach Jim Tomsula said earlier this week that he wasn’t sure if running back Carlos Hyde would be able to play again this season.

The answer to that question is now a definitive “no.” The 49ers placed Hyde on injured reserve on Saturday.

Hyde had not played since the middle of October after a stress fracture in his left foot sidelined him following a Thursday night game against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 7. Hyde played through the injury against Seattle and managed just 40 yards on 11 carries before being shelved.

It’s the right move for San Francisco to make. Hyde is a promising talent and the 49ers are going nowhere this season. There is no need to get him back as the team is playing out the string in December.

In Hyde’s place, the 49ers promoted tight end Brian Leonhardt from the practice squad.
