A HIDDEN DANGER OF PICKING GAMES

We don’t do much prognostication in these parts because: (1) people think that running this site is the equivalent of owning a crystal ball that allows us to see scoreboards at 0:00 of the fourth quarter days before kickoff; and (2) every time we try to pick games we prove that there’s no correlation between possessing access to some inside information and a lot of publicly available facts and figuring out how it all will come together on Sundays. (And Mondays.) (And some Thursdays.) But if we were to pick games, we would be careful to do so consistently. Though we really like Chris Mortensen of ESPN and don’t want to gratuitously slam him, a reader points out that Mort has two sets of game picks for Week Ten on ESPN.com. And, of course, they don’t completely match. (Thanks go out to the reader who pointed this out.) In the NFL Sunday Countdown picks for Week Ten, Mort picks the Giants to beat the Eagles. And in the ESPN.com NFL Expert Picks, Mort takes the Eagles over the Giants. Then again, whatever Mort’s doing is working. He’s currently got the best record for the season (84-46) on the Countdown competition, and likewise he’s doing the best (87-44) of any of the humans (and Mike Golic) on the Experts Picks page.
