The Patriots are making a change in their defensive backfield.

According to agent David Canter, the Patriots are releasing safety Steve Gregory, who has started 23 regular season games for the club in the last two seasons.

The 31-year-old Gregory notched 79 tackles and defended three passes in 14 games (11 starts) in 2013. A ninth-year pro from Syracuse, Gregory played six seasons for San Diego (2006-2011) before joining New England in 2012. Overall, Gregory has recorded 379 tackles and intercepted seven passes in regular season play in his NFL career.

With Gregory said to be departing, second-year pro Duron Harmon could be among the Patriots safeties vying for a bigger role in 2014.
