Alex Smith “not offended at all” that 49ers tried to get Peyton

Now that he’s signed a three-year contract to remain the 49ers’ quarterback, Alex Smith said it doesn’t bother him that his team hoped to sign Peyton Manning instead.

“Not offended at all,” Smith said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “In fact, I would have relished the opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback job with Peyton Manning.”

The reality, of course, is that Smith wouldn’t have had that opportunity: If Manning had chosen the 49ers, the team would have said sayonara to Smith, made Manning the starter and let Colin Kaepernick back him up.

But that’s in the past, and now 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh says there are no hard feelings, and Smith says the two of them have warm feelings toward each other.

“As good as they’ve always been and getting better,” Smith said. “The thing from day one when I first met coach Harbaugh is he’s always been up front and always been honest with me and has continued to do that through this entire process. It’s one of the reasons I love playing for him.”

And after a rough first week of free agency, now Smith can get back to playing for Harbaugh.
