Five days ago, Archie Manning said that he doubts that son Peyton and Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck would want to be teammates.
One day ago, Andrew Luck said he’d have no problem with that.
“I’m sure it would be a positive,” Luck said regarding the possibility of joining a team with an established quarterback, according to Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun. “I’m sure it would all work out, whatever the situation is.”
Of course, joining a team with an established quarterback would mean that Andrew Luck wouldn’t be playing as a rookie. Given the current trend, most quarterbacks taken in the first round are playing -- and those that aren’t surely want to.
“If you look at the league right now, all the rookies that are doing so well, I think it’s very possible to start,” said Luck, who was in Baltimore to accept the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
Ultimately, not much stock can be put in any of Luck’s comments, since he has yet to focus on the next phase of his career. “I haven’t really given much thought to the different scenarios of what could happen because I’ve got a bowl game to prepare for,” Luck said.
And so we’re inclined to regard Luck’s comments as the politically correct response to a loaded question. At this stage of the game, the last thing he needs to do is create a headline like the one Archie Manning created on Tuesday.
The time for headlines will come later, and the headlines -- if any -- would more likely come from Andrew’s father, Oliver, who played for the Oilers in the 1980s.
