Cardinals General Manager Steve Keim raved about running back David Johnson in an interview last week, saying “it’s scary” to see how good Johnson is when watching tape of the 2015 season.
Keim isn’t the only person in the organization who thinks the sky is the limit for Johnson as he heads into his second pro season. At the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Wednesday, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians was asked if he thought Johnson was already one of the best running backs in the league.
“I can’t say after one year’s work that he is one of the best, but he’s got a chance to be one of the all-time best,” Arians said.
Chris Johnson said this week that he’d like to return to the Cardinals for a second season and that the team is interested in bringing him back as well. Should both Johnsons be in the fold, it wouldn’t leave much room for 2013 sixth-round pick Andre Ellington. Keim pointed out Wednesday that Ellington hasn’t helped himself by missing 10 games over the last two seasons.
“We love his skill set, but it’s no secret the guy has had durability problems,” Keim said, via the Arizona Republic. “As an organization, you have expectations and if a guy doesn’t fulfill those expectations, you may have to move on.”
Given the organization’s feelings about David Johnson, moving on from Ellington probably won’t be that hard if that’s the determination made this year.
