Barkley picks CAA for representation

A year ago, Matt Barkley was expected to be both the top quarterback prospect and top overall prospect in the 2013 draft.

Now, not. As Barkley prepares to head for the NFL, he’s not regarded as the clear-cut top quarterback or the clear-cut top player. Some think Barkley won’t even be a first-round pick.

Charged with the task of improving Barkley’s draft stock will be CAA. According to SportsBusiness Daily, Barkley will get the Full Monty of representation from Tom Condon, Ben Dogra, and Jimmy Sexton.

The willingness of CAA to represent Barkley could mean that they won’t be signing any of the other top quarterback prospects, like West Virginia’s Geno Smith. And it also could mean CAA decided that, of the incoming quarterbacks, Barkley is the most likely to rise the highest through round one.

Indeed, someone (or more than one someones) will. While this year’s class of quarterbacks isn’t as good as last year’s, teams need quarterbacks, and they’ll draft quarterbacks perhaps before they otherwise should.

And no one wants to be the next guy who drafted a punter five spots before the next Russell Wilson.
