Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett and safety Devin McCourty raised their clenched fists at the end of the national anthem Sunday night in Arizona.
Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters made a similar gesture before his team’s game earlier in the day. Peters said after the game he had discussed it with Chiefs coach Andy Reid and only wanted to express himself.
McCourty’s twin brother, Jason, did the same before his game in Tennessee Sunday.
Bennett and Davin McCourty are believed to be the first Patriots players to make some sort of gesture or statement surrounding the national anthem since 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made clear during the preseason that he was remaining seated during the national anthem because he was protesting social injustice.
Four Dolphins players knelt for the national anthem before their game Sunday. On the other sideline, every Seahawks player stood and linked arms with the player next to him.
