Earlier this year, former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis said he believes former Steelers coach Bill Cowher has “really coveted” the Giants job.
Now that Cowher has indicated that he’s moving closer to a return and looking for the “right situation,” Bettis again has linked Cowher to Big Blue.
“I can tell Coach Cowher misses the game,” Bettis writes for SI.com. “He needs a proven quarterback, and because of that I look at Eli Manning and the Giants. If that team keeps heading in its current direction, a coaching change is going to be imminent.”
Though Bettis didn’t reiterate his belief that Cowher covets the job, there’s no reason to believe Bettis’ views have changed. And don’t forget that it was Bettis in 2006 who insisted that Cowher would quit following the season. Cowher denied it -- and then he quit following the season.
Bettis also raises a solid point as to the persistent rumors that Cowher could land with the Cowboys. “Coach Cowher is very used to a certain type of ownership,” Bettis said. “The Rooney family provided him leeway in Pittsburgh and let him handle football decisions. I don’t see Coach Cowher and Jerry Jones being on the same page.”
Even though the Cowboys have gone 15 years between Super Bowl appearances, Jones likes being able to run the show. Even if he gets rid of Wade Phillips, look for him to hire a head coach who doesn’t aspire to take over.
