The Browns traded from No. 2 to No. 8 before the draft started and they moved down to No. 15 while they were on the clock Thursday night, but they’ve decided to stop stockpiling future picks and use one.
Wide receiver Corey Coleman was the pick as the Browns go back to the Baylor wideout well while waiting for Josh Gordon’s possible reinstatement from his substance abuse suspension. If Gordon does return and things break Robert Griffin III’s way at quarterback, Baylor will be well represented in Cleveland.
Coleman is coming off a very productive year that saw him catch 76 passes for a Big 12-leading 1,363 yards and an FBS-best 20 touchdowns. That made him the choice as the winner of the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the best collegiate receiver and helped him become the first receiver off the board on Thursday night.
He isn’t the tallest receiver, but has a lot of speed off the line and can make plays after the catch. The Browns’ cupboard at wideout isn’t well stocked, which should leave plenty of work for Coleman as a rookie if Hue Jackson thinks he can handle the load early on.
