With 49ers coach Mike Singletary intent on finding out who blabbed about the instant caricature’s decision to drop trou in the locker room during halftime of the first game of his career, the investigation likely should start with receiver Bryant Johnson. The story was broken by reporters in Arizona, and Johnson played for the Cardinals before joining San Fran in the offseason. That said, isn’t it inevitable that the information was going to be leaked by someone in the organization? More importantly, doesn’t the fact that Singletary seems to be troubled by the disclosure serve only to highlight the fact that he knows he shouldn’t have done what he did? The better approach, in our view, would have been to let it go, and spend his time getting ready for the next game. Frankly, we’re already concerned that Singletary doesn’t get it. Praised by the media for his fire and his candor and the presumption that a Hall of Fame player necessariily will be a good head coach, we think Singletary doesn’t understand the nuances of the job he now holds and that, consequently, he won’t be holding it for long. UPDATE: We first thought of this based on reader comments posted in response to Tim MacMahon’s item on Singletary looking for the leaker. We decided to run with it after Gregg Rosenthal of Rotoworld.com sent us an e-mail suggesting the same thing.
