Tuesday brought the first on-field work of the offseason for the Dolphins as they held a practice to kick off the three-day minicamp they’re allowed to hold as a result of changing head coaches.
Adam Gase wasn’t the only one getting his first taste of practice with the team, of course. There was also cornerback Byron Maxwell, acquired in a trade with the Eagles after a dismal 2015 season in Philadelphia. Maxwell is getting a fresh start under Gase and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and Gase said Tuesday that the team expects Maxwell to “excel in our scheme.”
Maxwell is feeling the same way because he thinks the team will use him in an ideal fashion. He said Joseph is putting him in press coverage on the outside more often and that prospect excites him about the year to come.
“That’s one of the things I do best,” Maxwell said, via the Miami Herald. “I look forward to doing that ... He wants us to press and play man coverage and be aggressive with the receivers on the line and get them off their routes. ... I love it down here.”
By his own and everyone else’s admission, Maxwell wasn’t up to par with the Eagles. Scheme can’t explain all of his struggles, but moving into one that’s a better fit should work out a bit better for both team and corner.
