Chad Jones’ comeback has hit a snag.
Jones, who was a third-round pick of the Giants in 2010 and then got into a serious car accident that left him with major leg injuries, had hoped to take part in the team’s rookie minicamp this weekend as part of his journey back to the football field. Tom Rock of Newsday reported Wednesday that team doctors have not cleared him for that endeavor, however, and a team spokesman confirmed the report to Mike Garofolo of the Newark Star-Ledger. Jones was eligible to take part in the minicamp because he has no accrued seasons in the league thanks to his injury.
According to Rock’s report, Jones still has much to do before he’ll be able to get the green light. The Giants will have organized team activities later this month and the full-team mandatory minicamp will be in mid-June. It’s unknown if Jones will be able to participate at that point.
Jones was with the Giants when they started offseason workouts in April, but the LSU alum returned to New Orleans to do more rehab work on his own. Given that there were doubts about Jones’ ability to walk again after the car accident, the fact that he’s come this far is remarkable. If he is able to get on the field, that would be a success in and of itself.
