The Chargers scored on six straight possessions en route to a bye-clinching 42-17 victory against the Titans.
Said Chargers S Eric Weddle, “To win like this coming off a short week, playing on the road and spending Christmas away from our families really shows the maturity and the chemistry we’ve built. We put on a great performance. I thought this game was going to be a battle, but we just imposed our will on these guys.”
Chargers LB Shaun Phillips forced his NFL-leading seventh fumble of the season by stripping Titans QB Vince Young.
QB Philip Rivers completed passes to nine different Chargers on his way to 264 yards passing and two touchdowns.
Chargers LB Shawne Merriman was lampooned in a skit before the game because of his accusations about the Titans being a dirty team.
Although QB Vince Young had three turnovers, the Titans were quick to say that the blame for the loss shouldn’t all fall on his shoulders.
Said Titans coach Jeff Fisher, “This team had, it had life. It had a lot of life, and then we just kind of lost it.”
Defensive penalties, including one on Titans defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil, helped fuel the first four Chargers scoring drives.
Titans RB Chris Johnson finished the game with 1,872 rushing yards, which means he’ll need a season-high 234 yards to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing mark.
Some Titans defenders said that they missed experienced linebackers Keith Bulluck and Gerald McRath on Friday night.
