Clearing the air on Vick’s bonus

It has been well-established since last August that the Eagles owe quarterback Mike Vick a $1.5 million roster bonus on the fifth day of the 2009 league year.

And we’ve mentioned several times that the five-day window gives the Eagles time to trade Vick before the money is due.

At some point, however, some in the media have gotten the dates twisted around, describing the first day of the 2010 league year -- March 5 -- as the due date. It’s not, it’s the fifth day of the 2010 league year.

That’s not March 10, a date Dave Spadaro of the team’s official web site recently pegged. The fifth day of the 2010 league year is March 9, and if Vick is on the roster at 4:00 p.m. ET on March 9, he gets the $1.5 million roster bonus.

Actually, he gets the money regardless of whether he’s on the Eagles’ roster, since the only way he won’t be on the Eagles’ roster is if he’s traded to another team.

That said, there’s a good chance that he’d do a new deal with his new team. Either way, he’s getting at least $1.5 million on or before March 9.
