In March, the Ravens made a radical proposal for an overhaul to the replay system. Offered without the endorsement of the Competition Committee, the idea to switch from a long list of reviewable plays to a small universe of non-reviewable plays gathered plenty of momentum at the annual league meeting.
Ultimately, the issue was tabled until the May meeting of league owners. Mark Maske of the Washington Post now reports that the Competition Committee has supplanted Baltimore’s proposal with a more limited change to the current system.
While the full details aren’t available yet, Maske writes that the new proposal “will just try to clean up and simplify the language” of the rules.
The Ravens apparently are fine with most of the proposal, given that the Ravens have made only one independent proposal for the May meeting: Making illegal hits on defenseless players subject to replay review.
Regardless of whether the Competition Committee, the Ravens, or any other team proposes a change, at least 24 of the 32 owners must agree before a rule change happens.
