Could Chip Kelly be shut out of NFL jobs in 2016?

The Eagles gave Chip Kelly a head start in his quest for a new job. So where will his new job be?

At a time when some league insiders think he could land in Cleveland, there’s another real possibility to keep in mind. Kelly could land nowhere.

Although the Browns offered the job to Kelly in 2013, the thinking is that he was the choice of former CEO Joe Banner. Owner Jimmy Haslam, as one source put it, preferred Doug Marrone.

With Tennessee inclined to stick with Mike Mularkey, there are no clear options for Kelly -- especially given the way he handled the situation within the Philly front office. Although Kelly has said he doesn’t want to run the show with his next team (then again, Kelly said only six days ago he wasn’t running the show in Philly), the concern would be (maybe should be) that Kelly would try to parlay success into power, the same way he did in Philadelphia.

That would make Kelly an unlikely candidate for San Francisco or Miami, where the existing power structure wouldn’t want to have Kelly come in and usurp it. If Cleveland and may Indianapolis aren’t interested, there could be nothing for Kelly in 2016.

Except for his buyout, which will pay him more than $6 million to work for no one in 2016.
