The Cowboys signed another defensive end in free agency this year, but this one is lower-profile, and hopefully lower-headache, than the last one.

According to Todd Archer of ESPN.com, the Cowboys have signed Eagles free agent Cedric Thornton to a four-year deal.

Thornton, 27, gives the Cowboys some positional flexibility up front, but it’s a modest pick-up. He has 4.0 sacks in four seasons, so the expectations aren’t that high.

Again, it doesn’t have the high-end potential of last year’s Greg Hardy deal, but since he proved to be more trouble than he was worth (nearly $9 million for six sacks and countless distractions), the Cowboys might not mind not going down that path.
