Crennel was never contacted by Saints

In the aftermath of the announcement from Saints coach Sean Payton that the team would be shifting from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 front, it was reported that former Browns and Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel was on the short list to replace Steve Spagnuolo.

It appeared on the surface to be a great idea. Crennel and Payton have common ties tracing to Bill Parcells, and Crennel isn’t the kind of guy about whom Payton would have to worry running a bounty system or otherwise doing anything that comes close to breaking the rules.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, however, Crennel isn’t among the finalists for the job. In fact, we’re told that Crennel was never even contacted.

The finalists are believed to be former Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. It’s believed that Ryan will get the job.
