Despite not playing a down last season because of back problems, David Garrard is getting the first shot to be the Dolphins’ starting quarterback.

According to ESPN.com’s James Walker, the former Jacksonville starter worked with the first team at Dolphins minicamp Tuesday, with Matt Moore working with the second team. First-round pick Ryan Tannehill was with the third team.

This is one competition which could change quickly when camp rolls around.

Garrard has been good at times, when healthy. Moore has proven himself able to make the best of bad situations, both in Miami and in relief in Carolina. And Tannehill wasn’t drafted to sit for long.

But for the moment, Garrard’s getting the first shot at being a Hard Knocks star.
