Eagles announce Byron Maxwell deal

NFC Championship - Green Bay Packers v Seattle Seahawks

The Eagles may be getting a call from someone in the league office who wants to have a look at their phone records.

Early in the “legal tampering” period, word broke that cornerback Byron Maxwell would sign with the Eagles and Maxwell confirmed that by saying that he was heading to Philly. Maxwell’s agent tried to put the toothpaste back in the tube, but it’s safe to say that no one should be surprised that the Eagles have announced that Maxwell has agreed to a six-year contract with the team.

It’s also no big surprise that Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the total value of the deal is $63 million with $25 million guaranteed since that was also the word over the weekend. Leaks like that have led the NFL to tell “specific teams” to hold onto their phone records from the 72 hour-period when league rules allow teams to discuss contract terms but not agree to them.

However that shakes out, Maxwell is an Eagle and will likely be their top cornerback in 2015. That will mean multiple dates with Odell Beckham, Dez Bryant and DeSean Jackson, so he’ll be earning that big payday if he plays well.
