Emotional Josh McDaniels reflects on Kenny McKinley
A day after second-year Broncos receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead of an apparent suicide, coach Josh McDaniels fought back tears when talking about the 23-year-old player.
McDaniels said there was nothing to suggest that anything was amiss.
“We’ve all seen him recently. He’s been the same person every time we see him. Liked junk food and chips and things like that,” McDaniels said. “He was in the cafeteria, or in the training room, when we were seeing him the last so many weeks here. Nothing that would alarm us to anything like this.”
McKinley died Monday, reportedly of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
McDaniels said that there will be a moment of silence for McKinley before the team’s Week Three game against the Colts, and that the team will wear a helmet decal with his number, 11. His locker will remain in place, at least for the balance of the season.
McKinley’s coach at South Carolina, Steve Spurrier, who called McKinley “certainly one of my all-time favorite players.”
