Fred Evans Re-Signs With Vikings

Defensive tackle Fred Evans, a restricted free agent tendered at the second-round level by the Vikings, has accepted the one-year, $1.545 million contract, according to a league source. Evans, a backup on the depth chart, could end up being a key cog in the early-season rotation, if the four-game suspensions of starters Kevin and Pat Williams ultimately are upheld. Last year, a federal judge blocked the league from implementing the suspensions for violation of the policy regarding anabolic steroids and related substances pending the outcome of the underlying litigation. If the players eventually lose in court, they will be required to serve the suspensions. UPDATE: The Vikings have now announced the move formally.
