The Giants released defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka on Tuesday and they continued clearing out roster and cap space on Wednesday.
The team announced that they’ve released running back Peyton Hillis. Hillis ended last season on injured reserve after suffering a concussion and his departure will erase a $945,000 salary from the books as the Giants put together their 2015 roster.
It’s the second time in as many years that Hillis has had his season marred by a concussion. Hillis finished the year with 26 carries for 115 yards, a continuation of the downward trend that he’s been on since running for 1,177 yards and landing on the cover of Madden while with the Browns in 2010.
Hillis has run for 1,258 yards over the next four seasons, which doesn’t provide much reason to believe that there’s much more than a shot at providing depth coming his way this offseason. The Giants have Rashad Jennings, Andre Williams, Orleans Darkwa and Michael Cox under contract at running back for next season.
