The Giants aren’t sure when or if tight end Larry Donnell will be able to return to the field after last year’s season-ending neck injury, but they’d like to have him back on the roster.
They just aren’t willing to go overboard in their attempt to make that happen. According to multiple reports, the Giants have tendered the pending restricted free agent at the lowest level, which means he’ll make $1.671 million if he plays out the year under the tender offer.
Other teams can talk to Donnell and the Giants will have the right to match an offer, but, unlike the higher tenders, won’t get a draft pick back in the event Donnell does head elsewhere.
Donnell had a solid 2014 season for the Giants with 63 catches for 623 yards and six touchdowns, but played in just eight games last season because of a serious neck injury that has raised concerns about whether he’ll be able to play again. General Manager Jerry Reese said at the combine that the team will “have to wait and see where that goes.”
