Guys who made the cut shouldn’t uncork the champagne yet

There likely were sighs of relief in every NFL city today as players learned that they made the cut from 75 to 53.

But the men on the fringes shouldn’t get comfortable yet.

The process of flooding 32-times-22 guys into the market (that’s 704 players in all) routinely triggers a flurry of waiver claims and free-agent signings. And for each guy who finds a new home another guy who thought he’d arrived will be jettisoned.

The process will continue throughout the 2010 season, with the final eight roster spots churning based on factors like short-term needs, long-term plans, relationships with agents, relationships with players, and other connections and motivations that influence the decisions to give or not give away one of the eight positions on the roster that lets a guy practice but not dress on game days.
