At a time when in some circles it’s believed to be a done deal that quarterback Brian Hoyer will enter a competition in Houston with Ryan Mallett, there’s still a chance Hoyer will land with the Jets.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Jets and Hoyer’s agent, Joe Linta, talked twice on Monday and plan to talk again Monday night.

New Jets G.M. Mike Maccagnan arrived from Houston earlier this year, where he’d been the Texans’ director of college scouting. It sets up an interesting tug-of-way for Maccagnan, who is trying to address the most important position on the roster.

For Hoyer, the question becomes whether he’ll have a better chance beating out Geno Smith or Ryan Mallett for the starting job. Money will surely be a factor, too.

If Hoyer picks the Jets, the Patriots will have two former Tom Brady backups in the AFC East. If Hoyer picks the Texans, the Jets could end up with former Bills starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, as Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News noted on Monday.

Either way, the most intriguing division in the NFL is about to get even more intriguing.
