Idzik finally gave Rex what he wanted

Idzik

Jets coach Rex Ryan desperately wanted playmakers. He may have gotten Playmakers.

Per a league source, Ryan had been lobbying aggressively for impact players to aid his effort to keep his job. He wanted receiver DeSean Jackson. He wanted cornerback Darrelle Revis. He got neither.

Eventually, Rex got Harvin. And perhaps Rex should be careful what he wishes for.

G.M. John Idzik made the move in part to placate Rex, and in part to spend some of the cash and cap space required by the four-year rolling average that currently applies under the current labor deal. It ultimately could be a very short-term move.

With, as Peter King of TheMMQB.com reported on Saturday, the sixth-round pick becoming a fourth-round pick only if Harvin is on the roster in 2015 and given that Harvin’s base salary for next season will be $10 million, the Jets may decide to conduct the Third Annual Percy Harvin Trade next March, or to cut him.

The decision on Harvin after the season will hinge on whether Ryan remains as the coach, whether a new coach would want Harvin, and whether Harvin will accept less than $10 million next year to stay with the Jets. Before Harvin gets to 2015 with the Jets, he has to get through 2014. If he does -- if he plays in the final nine games of the 2014 regular season -- the Jets will have gotten one more game out of Harvin than the Seahawks got in two seasons combined.
