Toby Gerhart’s football career keeps moving closer to having the same status as an increasing number of people with the same last name (but slightly different spelling) in Season 2 of Fargo.
The d-less Gerhart has been placed on injured reserve by the Jaguars, with a groin injury. It ends his second season with the team, during which he had 20 carries for 44 yards in seven appearances.
The Jaguars filled Gerhart’s roster spot by promoting receiver Rashad Lawrence from the practice squad.
During his six NFL seasons, Gerhart maxed out at 531 rushing yards in 2011, his second season as a second-round draft pick with the Vikings. In 2012, a year in which Gerhart was expected to see plenty of reps early in the season as Adrian Peterson continued to recover from a torn ACL, Gerhart had a pre-2015 career low 169 yards (and Peterson nearly set the single-season rushing record.)
The former Stanford tailback signed a three-year, $10.5 million contract in 2014 with Jacksonville, after his four-year rookie deal in Minnesota expired. Due to make $3 million in 2016, Gerhart’s contract could be taking a proverbial bullet through the head, perhaps right after he refers to the team’s mascot as a mongrel.
