The Giants activated fullback Henry Hynoski from the physically unable to perform list on Thursday, leaving the Giants with a pair of players still waiting for the green light to start practicing with the team.
With all due respect to defensive tackle Markus Kuhn, only one of those two players is of significant interest to the team. That would be defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who had back surgery late in the offseason and had been trying to work his way into good enough shape to rejoin the team before the start of the regular season.
Coach Tom Coughlin was asked about the timetable for Pierre-Paul (and Kuhn) to return on Thursday and the news was pretty positive. Coughlin said that Pierre-Paul is “getting close” to coming off the list, although he cautioned he’s merely listening to the team’s medical staff on that front.
Pierre-Paul said earlier this summer that he’s not focusing on Week One if it is wiser to wait until later in the season to get back on the field. That’s a wise approach, especially for a part of the body as prone to setbacks as the back, but the Giants would clearly benefit from having their best defensive lineman back on the field as soon as possible.
