Jay Gruden on brother possibly returning to Raiders: “Nothing would surprise me with Jon”

With the firing of Dennis Allen in Oakland, owner Mark Davis certainly seems intrigued about the idea of bringing Jon Gruden back to the Bay Area to take the helm of the Raiders once again.

Whether Gruden has interest in returning to Oakland remains to be seen. Gruden has constantly expressed that he is happy in his current role as a commentator on Monday Night Football for ESPN.

Jon’s brother, Jay, is now the head coach of the Washington Redskins and getting his first chance to lead an NFL team.

On a conference call with Seattle reporters ahead of Washington’s game against the Seahawks this week (which just happens to be the Monday night game), Jay Gruden was asked about whether he thought Jon may have interest in returning to lead the Raiders.

“Nothing would surprise me with Jon,” Jay Gruden said. “I don’t want to put words in his mouth or predict anything. He hasn’t told me one way or another. He loves what he’s doing with ESPN. I know that for a fact. But I also know he loves coaching and I know that for a fact. He’s got one of the greatest jobs in sports and he loves ESPN and loves what he does, but I also know he loves the competitive nature of coaching.

“Also know that he hates coaching from time to time; kind of like I do on a Sunday night when you go home. I don’t know. It wouldn’t surprise me one way or the other. He’s got two great jobs that he could potentially do.”

Jon Gruden went 38-26 in four seasons leading the Raiders. He’s the last head coach of the Raiders to have a winning record in his tenure with the team.
