Jets’ flirtation with Schaub may not have changed much

As the Texans prepare to visit the Jets on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, the ESPN hype machine has gone into hyperdrive.

And with the Tim Tebow teat milked drier than a Bible belt ‘burgh at noon on Sunday, Bristol needed to go in a different direction.

Enter ESPN analyst and former Jets coach Eric Mangini, who tells ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini that the Jets tried to trade for Matt Schaub in 2006, Mangini’s first year with the organization.

We tried like hell to get him,” Mangini told Cimini.

The Jets offered defensive end John Abraham, and the Falcons instead opted to part with a low first-round pick to get the pass rusher. (The Falcons eventually traded Schaub to the Texans in 2006, just weeks before a dogfighting operation was discovered on Mike Vick’s rural property in Virginia.)

So what if the Jets had pried Schaub away from Atlanta? Cimini suggests that the Jets wouldn’t have pursued Brett Favre in 2008, and that the Jets in turn wouldn’t have had to draft Mark Sanchez in 2009, or then to trade for Tim Tebow in 2012.

This presumes that Schaub would have been deemed to be good enough to prompt the Jets to believe that tickets and PSLs could be sold without making a play for Favre when he became available in 2008. Given Schaub’s performance once he became a starter in Houston, that’s a bit of a stretch.

It’s more likely that the Jets would have still become infatuated with the possibility of landing Favre in 2008, prompting them to dump Schaub overboard the same way they gave up on Chad Pennington. So while it’s mildly intriguing that the Jets wanted Schaub, it hardly would have triggered a dramatic reshuffling of the deck, with Favre going to team like Tampa in 2008 and someone else drafting Mark Sanchez in 2009.

So, in other words, the boys in Bristol should stick with Tebow.
