Jets keep chirping right up to opening bell

Normally, we look forward to the kickoff of a Jets-Patriots game simply because it’s a nice little AFC East rivalry.

This week, kickoff can’t come soon enough, if only because it means the Jets will have their mouthpieces in.

In what should be (we hope) the final bag of flaming feces delivered to the Patriots’ front porch, ESPN’s Rachel Nichols reports that Jets linebacker Bart Scott promised the Jets were “going after Tom Brady today.”

Nichols quoted Scott as saying, “Hey, maybe I’m stupid and if they want to fine me, I’ve got plenty of money.”

Nichols also reported that Jets head coach Rex Ryan showed the team video of “Superman breaking free of Kryptonite” and clips from Cinderella Man to help motivate them.

Meanwhile, at the Patriots’ team hotel, New England coach Bill Belichick stood and read each quote from the Jets this week. Nichols said Belichick concluded by saying, “We will do our talking on the field.”

Hopefully, this puts a wrap on the pregame gum-flapping. If it doesn’t, we’ll be sure to let you all know.

UPDATE: A source disputes Nichols’ account of Belichick reading any Jets quotes to his team last night. Not only did Belichick not mention the quotes, the source said, he didn’t even address the team at the hotel.
