With talk heating up regarding the location of a new 49ers stadium (San Francisco and Santa Clara currently are pulling opposite ends of the rope), there’s a wrinkle in the situation that cannot be ignored.
There are two teams in the broader Bay Area market.
And a league source tells us that the NFL strongly prefers that both the 49ers and the Raiders share a stadium, if a new stadium is to be built.
The reasoning is fairly simple. With a price tag of $750 million or more associated with the construction of a new facility, it makes more sense to build one than it does to build two.
So we’ll be setting aside the East Coast bias (for a change) and keeping close watch on how this one unfolds. The smart move would be to build a Jets-Giants facility in a suitable location. Getting the 49ers and Raiders on the same page and finding a suitable location will be the biggest challenge.
