Running back Garrett Wolfe, who was arrested last month in Miami, is not expected to return to the Bears when the lockout ends. And that was the case even before he got arrested.
Wolfe, who is scheduled to be arraigned on June 21 on charges of retail theft, disorderly conduct, assault of a police officer and resisting an officer with violence, will be a free agent whenever free agency starts, and indications are that he wasn’t in the Bears’ plans anyway.
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune writes that the real sign that Wolfe would be gone came when the Bears did not tender him an offer as a potential restricted free agent in February. Wolfe is a solid special teams contributor, but he only had four carries for eight yards last season, and the Bears would rather have a backup running back who can bring something to the table on offense in addition to helping on special teams.
Getting arrested won’t be a good thing for Wolfe’s career, as it’s likely to make other teams more hesitant to sign him in free agency. But the arrest isn’t the primary reason he’s on the way out of Chicago.
