Lito Sheppard heads to Detroit for a visit
Veteran cornerback Lito Sheppard got his wish a year ago, via a trade from Philly to the Jets and a re-worked contract.
But the Jets opted not to pick up a bonus that would have continued the relationship into 2010, and Sheppard has been -- and remains -- a free agent.
That could soon change. Per a league source, he’ll visit the Lions on Wednesday and Thursday.
Sheppard, a first-round pick of the Eagles in 2002, became a full-time starter in 2004 but lost his position in 2008, after the arrival of Asante Samuel. He appeared in 11 regular-season games for the Jets last year, starting nine. He also started the team’s two playoff wins, but he was yanked from the starting lineup for the AFC title game.
Sheppard qualified for the Pro Bowl in 2004 and 2006; he was named a first-team All Pro in 2004.
