As late hits go, it was fairly egregious.

But the penalty pales in relation to some recent ones.

Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews was fined $15,000 for his late hit out of bounds on 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick last week.

While it’s not nearly the same as Ndamukong Suh’s $100,000 fine, Matthews also doesn’t have Suh’s kind of track record, which must be the difference.

Still, Matthews was left defending himself this week, declaring he was “an awesome player, not a dirty player.”

There are those in San Francisco who might beg to differ.
