Nnamdi Asomugha: Adjustment to Niners hasn’t been that hard
So far, so good for cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha with the 49ers.
That’s the word from Asomugha himself while discussing his transition to the 49ers’ defensive scheme after spending the last two years on an Eagles defense that was widely believed to be a bad fit for his skills. Asomugha called defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s scheme “more diverse than you think” and he won’t be playing the man coverage he prefers all the time, but said that his teammates have made the transition easier than it was when he moved to Philly in 2011.
“The adjustment hasn’t been that hard,” Asomugha said, via the team’s website. “This is a really solid defense all the way around. Since everybody knows the defense, it’s really easy to communicate. Anything I don’t get I can ask anybody on the defense and they pretty much have it down.”
Asomugha isn’t guaranteed any money in the deal he signed with the 49ers and that means he isn’t guaranteed anything more than a shot at a roster spot with the team this year either. If scheme issues were really the crux of the problems with the Eagles, Asomugha’s a decent bet to get that roster spot. It didn’t always look that way, though, so recovering the Asomugha of old might not be as simple as changing coasts.
