Safety Ed Reed had a long meeting with the Texans this week, but it didn’t result in a contract.
That’s left Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome with a chance to make a bid to keep Reed in the only NFL uniform he’s ever worn. Newsome told Jarrett Bell of USA Today that he will speak with Reed’s agent David Dunn at the owners meetings in Arizona and that he expects Reed to come to a decision about where he wants to play before the end of the week.
“Four years ago, we went down this same road with Ray,” Newsome said. “Dave always does a very good job of keeping us in the loop. That doesn’t mean that Ed will come back, and it doesn’t mean that he will leave.”
The big question mark is how much money the two teams are willing to pay Reed for his services next season, something that Newsome predictably refused to discuss with Bell when talking about his plan to meet with Dunn. It may not be the only thing driving Reed’s decision, but it is surely on the list of things that will determine whether or not another member of the Ravens defense leaves the team this offseason.
