The Packers threw a cannonball into the free agency pool last night by keeping wide receiver Randall Cobb off the market with a four-year, $40 million deal.

This one’s more of a ripple, but it’s another step toward stability in Green Bay.

According to Lance Allan of WTMJ in Milwaukee, the Packers have agreed to a one-year deal with quarterback Scott Tolzien, worth around $1.375 million.

Backup Matt Flynn is also scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, and there’s no indication this is an “instead-of” move.

Tolzien was inactive for the first 15 games of last season, but got to dress for games down the stretch after Aaron Rodgers injured his ankle.

They think he’s an ascending player, even if they hope he never has to play for them.
